These are the numbers payroll actually reads. They are not the statutory brackets: each boundary is the statutory bracket plus the standard deduction less the line 1g offset of $8,600 for a single filer. Our test suite reconciles every row against the statutory brackets before the site is built.

Your employer withholds Additional Medicare Tax above $200,000 of wages regardless of your filing status, and ignores your spouse's wages and any other employer. The filing-status thresholds on Form 8959 are different, which is why a married couple sometimes gets a small refund of it.

For the wider picture, the US hub starts from the question you are actually asking.

Questions people actually ask

Why does this differ from my paycheck?

The most common reasons are a W-4 with Step 3 credits or Step 4 amounts you have forgotten about, a pre-tax deduction not entered here, or a state that has not reissued its withholding tables for 2026.

What is the line 1g offset?

A fixed amount subtracted in Worksheet 1A: $12,900 for married filing jointly and $8,600 otherwise, or zero if the Step 2 box is checked. It is not inflation indexed and has not changed since 2020.
