About the Idaho figure

Idaho's Tax Commission confirms new 2026 withholding tables and the sunset of the Child Tax Credit allowance, but its press release gives no dollar amounts and the percentage-method table (EPB00744) could not be retrieved. The zero-tax thresholds used here are the federal standard deduction amounts Idaho couples to ($16,100 / $32,200 / $24,150); one payroll vendor instead shows $15,000 / $30,000, which look like 2025 values. The 5.3% flat rate is not in doubt. Pull EPB00744 to resolve the thresholds.

The half nobody publishes

The tax difference above is real and it is usually smaller than the housing difference. A move that saves $3,423 a year in state tax and costs $6,846 a year more in rent is a move that loses money, and almost no calculator will tell you that because the tax calculators do not have rent data and the cost-of-living calculators do not have tax data.

Work out your current rent, the rent where you would live, and put the difference next to the tax difference above. That subtraction is the answer. This guide walks through it.

What changes that is not the rate

Two states can have similar headline rates and very different outcomes, because the deductions and the base differ. Oregon uses OR-W-4 as its withholding certificate; Idaho uses ID W-4. The standard deduction used in payroll is $2,910 and $16,100 respectively.

Local income taxes are the other thing that moves. In this pair, Oregon has Multnomah County (Preschool for All), Metro Supportive Housing Services.

Before you commit, Idaho's page does the same, and the paycheck calculator runs your own numbers in either state.
